TROY, N.Y. – Freshman goalie Mathias Lange (Klagenfurt, Austria/New York Apple Core) made 31 saves, including 15 in the first period, to backstop Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) to a 4-2 win over Quinnipiac University in a Division I ECACHL contest at the Houston Field House.  With the victory the Engineers improve to 5-4-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the ECACHL while the 20th-ranked Bobcats, saw their eight-game winning streak snapped.  Quinnipiac is now to 8-3-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the league.

The Engineers broke out to an early 1-0 lead in the first period when sophomore Tommy Green (Martensville, SK/Melfort Mustangs) tallied his second goal of the season.  After collecting a pass from senior Chris Hussey (Plymouth, MA/Avon Old Farms), Green wrested a shot past the left side of Bobcats goalie Bud Fisher (Peterborough, ON/Lindsay) for the goal.  Defenseman Keith MCWilliams (Valencia, CA/Omaha Lancers), who moved the puck up the ice, was also awarded an assist.  Quinnipiac’s Brian Leitch (Coquitlam, BC/Merritt) knotted the score at 1-1 after catching a pass from Reid Cashman (Red Wing, MN/Waterloo) and scoring past the left side of Lange for a power play goal at 7:51 of the first period.

Rensselaer pulled ahead mid-way through the second period when senior Brad Farynuk (Enderby, BC/Vernon Vipers) ripped a one-timer past Fisher for a power play goal at the 12:40 mark.  Oren Eizenman (Toronto, ON/Wexford Raiders) was credited with the only assist on the goal, Farynuk’s third of the season.  Quinnipiac freshman David Marshall (Buffalo, MN/Chicago) evened the score at 2-2 at the 8:05 mark when he skated into the zone alone and scored from just outside the circle.  The Engineers regained their one-goal margin less than a minute later when senior Kevin Croxton (Calgary, AB/Camrose Kodiaks) took a pass from Farynuk and deked the goalie for his seventh of the season.

Jonathan Ornelas (Mississauga, ON/Milton IceHawks) added insurance for the Engineers in the third period after he settled the puck in front of the net off an Eizenman shot and swept it into the net at the 1:16 mark.

In addition to his 15 saves in the first period, Lange also had six in the second and ten in the third to improve to 4-2-1.  Fisher finished with 26 saves in the Quinnipiac goal, including six in the first, 12 in the second and eight in the third.  He is now 5-2-0 on the season.

Rensselaer returns to action on Saturday night when Princeton visits the Field House in Joe Juneau Night.  The Bobcats play at Union College in an ECACHL contest on Saturday night.  Both games begin at 7pm
